Shaft seal
A shaft seal, abbreviated as WDR or RWDR (radial shaft seal), seals a rotating shaft. Many areas of mechanical engineering are sealed using elastomer-steel-casing-worm-spring designs. However, these function satisfactorily only if the sealing lip is lubricated with the medium to be sealed (usually oil and grease). There are also operational limits regarding pressure, temperature, sliding speed, and chemical resistance.
A radial shaft seal with a PTFE sealing lip compensates for nearly all the disadvantages of traditional rubber seals. It is also suitable for poorly lubricating media like water or solvent, Insufficient lubrication and also for absolute Dry running suitable. Shaft seal out of UHMW-PE (Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene, also known as PE 1000; trade names: PolyHi-Solidur®, Murtfeld S®, Muralen®, TIVAR®) can even handle abrasive bulk materials such as sand or ceramic dust.
Thanks to the wide range of design options, there is hardly anything left to be desired for the designer. Whether it's custom dimensions, special designs, or constructions, Dead-space-free design, FDA-compliant materials, high pressures, high or low temperatures. (Almost) anything is possible, and thanks to rapidly develop machined products and bring them into mass production.
