Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) is the PFAS-free alternative material to PTFE. Due to the strength of this often underestimated material, radial shaft seals made of UHMW-PE can generally be designed as one-piece components. They are also manufactured by machining, although this requires extensive manufacturing expertise. The housing can incorporate sealing lips, O-ring grooves, wrench flats, threads, flanges, and flushing ports. Even in its unfilled state, the plastic is extremely wear-resistant and generally does not require fillers. It has high resilience, eliminating the need for additional spring elements. Abrasive media or dry running have little effect on the seals. Due to the stiffness of the sealing lips, these shaft seals can also accommodate combined radial and axial movements and thus be used as wipers.
