PEI – Polyetherimide

High-temperature-resistant plastic with excellent electrical properties

PEI (polyetherimide) is an amorphous high-performance thermoplastic that combines high strength, excellent heat resistance, and outstanding electrical properties. The material is primarily used in applications that require high temperature resistance, mechanical strength, and electrical insulation.

PEI offers high mechanical strength and stiffness. These properties are largely maintained even at elevated temperatures. As a result, PEI can be used continuously at temperatures of approximately 170°C (338°F) and exhibits a heat deflection temperature of around 200°C (392°F).

The material is well suited as an electrical insulator due to its high dielectric strength and stable dielectric properties. PEI is transparent to amber in color and exhibits low thermal expansion as well as good dimensional stability.

Applications of PEI:

PEI is primarily used in applications that require high temperature resistance and electrical insulation. In industry, it is commonly used for connectors, housings, and precision components. The material is particularly valued in applications with sterilization requirements and in lightweight construction.

Typical application areas:

  • Electrical insulation components (connectors, housings)
  • Precision components for machinery and plant engineering exposed to thermal stress
  • Components for medical technology and sterilization processes
  • Lightweight components for aerospace applications

Properties of PEI at a glance:

  • High strength and stiffness
  • Excellent heat deflection temperature and temperature stability.
  • High heat resistance under load (>200°C)
  • High Service Temperature up to Approximately 170°C
  • Good electrical insulating properties
  • Good Dimensional Stability
  • Low coefficient of thermal expansion
  • Good chemical resistance and hydrolysis resistance
  • Transparent to amber in color
