The jacket ring (also known as Stepseal®, Glydring®, rotary slide ring, or stepped ring) is an inexpensive sealing element that virtually EVERY supplier of standard designs carries in its catalog. Due to the simple design of the installation space and the manufacturers’ promises, this piston/rod seal is widely used.
Reality quickly reveals the limitations of this much-touted seal. Wear, leaks, and high driving forces can result.
