Diaphragms
A diaphragm is used when a wiper seal cannot be employed due to leakage or wear issues. This is the case, for example, when sensitive media (food, beverages, pharmaceuticals) or aggressive fluids (chemical processing, paint application systems) must be sealed and conventional sealing solutions are unable to provide the required performance.
Rubber diaphragms made from materials such as HNBR or Viton®, sometimes reinforced with fabric, are widely known. Less well known is the exceptional flexural fatigue resistance of PTFE diaphragms, which can be fully comparable to that of rubber diaphragms. Teflon® diaphragms are particularly preferred for the following applications:
- Diaphragm pump for food applications
- Diaphragm pressure regulator for paint systems
- Switching diaphragm for valves in beverage filling equipment
- Pumping diaphragm for gas compressors or vacuum pumps
Due to the ongoing and widespread discussion surrounding PFAS, PTFE diaphragms are increasingly being replaced by UHMW-PE diaphragms.
